MATHER, Sacramento County — The Illa M. Collin Conservation Preserve next to Mather Regional Park protects rare vernal pool habitat and wildlife, but it has stricter public-access rules than the neighboring recreation park.
Sacramento County describes the preserve as approximately 1,342 acres created to protect sensitive habitat and listed species, including vernal pool fairy shrimp, vernal pool tadpole shrimp and other rare plants and animals. The shallow seasonal pools form and dry according to rainfall patterns, and fragile ecosystems can be damaged by vehicles or off-trail travel.
The county states that limited walking is allowed in portions of the preserve, while motor vehicles, bicycles, horses and dogs are prohibited. The preserve does not permit picnics; nearby Mather Regional Park has designated picnic facilities and restrooms.
Practical information for residents
Visitors should follow current signs and approved paths, as a broader public access plan remains under development. The preserve is not a dog park or an unrestricted recreation trail. Questions about authorized educational visits and research can be directed to the conservation manager listed on the county’s page.
